What Makes CO₂ Guns Different
Definition: A CO₂ airgun is powered by liquid carbon dioxide stored in a disposable capsule — usually the 12-gram type — that self-pressurizes to roughly 850 psi at 70°F. The gun's valve releases a metered burst of that gas for each shot, which means power comes from the capsule's pressure, and the capsule's pressure comes from temperature.
Two design facts drive all CO₂ maintenance. First, the system is always under pressure while a capsule is installed — the piercing seal, valve seals, and O-rings work full time, not just during the shot. Second, CO₂ pressure tracks temperature, steeply. Neither a spring-piston nor a PCP behaves this way, which is why a CO₂ gun has its own routine instead of borrowing the spring-piston routine.
The good news: the routine is the shortest in airgunning. One drop of the right oil at the right moment does most of the work.
The Capsule-Tip Ritual (One Drop, Every Capsule)
Here is the single most valuable habit in CO₂ gun ownership: before you load a new capsule, put one drop of 100% silicone oil on the capsule's neck — the tip that gets pierced. When the gun drives the capsule into the piercing pin, that drop gets carried directly onto the piercing seal, the one seal that takes the most abuse and causes the most leaks. The pressurized gas then mists a trace of it through the valve, conditioning the internal seals it touches along the way.

A healthy CO₂ gun holds gas for weeks. If yours doesn't, the leak has a location, and the location tells you the fix:

Shots Per Capsule & What Temperature Does
A 12-gram capsule delivers roughly 30 to 80 shots depending on the gun — full-power rifles sit at the low end, low-velocity pistols at the high end. Two behaviors surprise new owners, and both are just CO₂ physics:
Rapid fire drops velocity. Each shot draws liquid CO₂ into vapor, and that phase change chills the capsule. A cold capsule means lower pressure means slower pellets — shoot fast and you can feel the gun "fade." Give it 10–15 seconds between shots when consistency matters, and accuracy comes back.
Weather changes your gun. Below about 50°F, capsule pressure sags enough that velocity visibly drops — CO₂ guns are fair-weather tools. And above 120°F — a car dashboard in summer sun — capsule pressure climbs toward the burst-disc limit. Store capsules indoors, never in a hot vehicle.

Leave the CO₂ In, or Take It Out?
The eternal CO₂ debate, settled by time-frame:
Days to a couple of weeks: leave it in. Constant pressure actually keeps the seals seated, and pulling a half-full capsule wastes gas. This is normal use.
A month or more: take it out. Long-term pressure gradually compresses the valve seals into a set — the shape memory that leads to slow leaks later. For storage, vent the remaining charge, remove the capsule, run one drop of silicone oil onto the piercing seal, and store the gun uncharged. When it comes out of storage, the first capsule goes in with the usual drop and everything wakes up conditioned.
Cleaning & External Care
Beyond the gas system, a CO₂ gun needs only light care. Wipe external metal after handling — fingerprints corrode blued steel. Keep the barrel bore dry or very lightly maintained per your manual; most CO₂ guns shooting BBs or pellets need only an occasional cleaning pull-through. Check that grip screws and rail screws stay snug. Every few months, put a drop of silicone oil on each visible O-ring — magazine seals, fill-cap rings — and you're done.
