Why it matters

Why Cleaning Your Firearm Is Critical

  1. 1
    Rust & Corrosion

Residue, moisture and carbon attack metal surfaces.

  2. 2
    Mechanical Failures

Old oil and carbon buildup cause jams, misfires and stoppages.

  3. 3
    Loss of Accuracy

Dirty barrels shift point of impact.

  4. 4
Malfunction When You Need It Most

A dirty gun can fail during critical moments.

  5. 5
    Safety Hazards

    Fouling can prevent proper lockup.

The two pistols above

Same model, same age. One was cleaned on a schedule and one was not. Everything below is the difference between them.

⚠ Safety reminder

Storing for more than a month? Clean and oil all metal surfaces first.

The procedure

Eight Steps, Start to Finish

Each step does one job completely. Step 4 has two options — use the foam or the cleaner, not both.

Safety First

Step 01

Safety First

  • Unload the firearm.
  • Remove the magazine.
  • Check the chamber.
  • Keep ammunition away from the work area.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection.
What You Need

Step 02

What You Need

  • GNP Defend products.
  • Cleaning tools — rod, patches, bore snake, cloths, Q-tips.
Prep & Initial Cleaning

Step 03

Prep & Initial Cleaning

  • Disassemble the firearm.
  • Spray Degreaser Cleaner on all metal parts.
  • The high-pressure blast removes carbon, old oil, grease and moisture.
  • No wiping needed — it evaporates in seconds.
Clean the Barrel

Step 04

Clean the Barrel

Option A — Bore Cleaning FoamRecommended

  • Spray inside the barrel.
  • The foam expands for deep contact.
  • Normal fouling dissolves in minutes.
  • 30+ days without cleaning: soak 10–15 minutes.
  • Clean out with patches or a bore snake.
Clean the Barrel

Step 04

Clean the Barrel

Option B — Gun CleanerSame cleaning power

  • Spray inside the barrel.
  • Same deep-clean technology as the foam.
  • Minutes for regular fouling.
  • 10–15 minutes for heavy carbon.
  • Brush and patch clean.
Clean the Rest of the Firearm

Step 05

Clean the Rest of the Firearm

  • Spray Gun Cleaner on the slide, frame and bolt.
  • Wait 2–5 minutes.
  • Brush and wipe clean.
  • If you used the foam in step 4 — use Cleaner for the rest of the firearm.
  • If you did not use foam — use Cleaner for the whole firearm, barrel included.
Rinse With Degreaser

Step 06

Rinse With Degreaser

  • Spray Degreaser again to remove cleaner residue.
  • Removes leftover oils, fouling and moisture.
  • Evaporates fast.
Lubricate — Grease First

Step 07

Lubricate — Grease First

  • Slide rails.
  • Barrel hood.
  • Locking surfaces.
  • Cam points.
  • Metal-to-metal contact areas.
  • Rifles: bolt carrier and charging handle rails.
Lubricate — Then Oil

Step 07

Lubricate — Then Oil

  • Light coat over metal surfaces, after the grease.
  • Prevents rust.
  • Stops carbon from hardening.
  • Wipe the barrel dry before shooting.
Reassemble & Clean Optics

Step 08

Reassemble & Clean Optics

  • Reassemble the firearm.
  • Function-check per the firearm manufacturer’s instructions before storing or shooting.
  • Clean optics with GNP Defend Optic Cleaner — water-repellent, streak-free finish.
