Polymer-Safe Gun Cleaner: What's Safe on a Frame

What "Polymer Safe" Actually Means

Most modern pistol frames, from the Glock to the Smith & Wesson M&P to the SIG P320 grip module, are a glass-filled nylon. It is a tough material. It does not rust, it does not care about oil, and it survives years of being knocked around a range bag. What it does not like is a small family of solvents that are built to dissolve resins, because a nylon frame is a resin.

That family is short and worth memorising: chlorinated brake cleaner, acetone, MEK, lacquer thinner and the more aggressive carburetor cleaners. None of them is a gun product. They end up on frames because they are cheap, they are already on the shelf in the garage, and they strip carbon fast. The first sign of trouble is usually a white haze on the surface, then fine cracks, called crazing, at the places that carry stress: the pin holes, the rail cuts and the trigger housing. A frame that has been softened by one of those solvents does not recover.

A cleaner that is safe on polymer is simply one that has none of those chemicals in it. Two kinds of product meet that test. The first is the ordinary petroleum-type gun solvent, which is usually fine on nylon in the short contact a cleaning session involves, though you will want to keep it off tritium night sights and not let it pool. Where a Polymer Frame Gets Dirty

The frame does not foul the way a barrel does. It collects what blows back from the breech: carbon on the rails, a grey paste of carbon and old oil in the locking block area, powder residue in the trigger housing, and lint from carry mixed into all of it. The one that surprises people: the damage from brake cleaner is not always immediate. A frame can look fine after the session and show the white haze a day later, once the solvent has finished working into the surface. Do not judge a chemical by the first five minutes.

What to Use on a Polymer Frame

Our answer is the water-based cleaner, and the reason is not marketing. Every chemical on the never list is a hydrocarbon or ketone solvent. A water-based cleaner does its work with surfactants instead: it wets the fouling, lifts it from the surface and lets a cloth carry it away. There is no solvent in it that a nylon frame, an aluminum receiver or a Cerakote finish will react to, because there is no solvent of that kind in it at all.

Water-based is not the same as weak. How to Clean a Polymer Frame, Step by Step

This follows the order of operations on our How to Clean Your Firearm page, with the frame-specific notes added. If you already own a routine that works, the only changes worth making are the ones in bold.

6. Degreaser rinse A final pass of Degreaser on the metal parts to lift what the cleaning loosened. Again, metal only. Wipe the frame dry with a clean cloth.
7. Lubricate Grease where metal slides under load if you use it, then a light film of Gun Oil on the named points. Oil the steel rails, the barrel hood and the outside of the barrel. Nothing on the polymer. Nothing in the striker channel.
8. Reassemble and check Function check, wipe the exterior. A frame that feels tacky was over-oiled; wipe it back to dry.
Stippled or textured frames: the texture holds residue and holds liquid. A soft nylon brush and a dry cloth do more than any amount of extra cleaner. Aggressive solvents are what dull a stipple job, so this is exactly where the water-based cleaner earns its place.

Night Sights, Cerakote and Aluminum

The frame is not the only thing on a modern pistol that dislikes shop chemicals. Tritium night sights have lenses that fog when acetone or a chlorinated cleaner gets on them, and once fogged they stay that way. Cerakote is a hard ceramic coating and is very difficult to hurt, but the strong solvents that harm polymer will dull it over repeated sessions. Anodized aluminum, on a lightweight frame or an optic cut, is the same story. Every one of those risks comes from the solvent, not from the cleaning. If you own a polymer-framed pistol, buy one cleaner for the frame and stop thinking about it: a water-based gun cleaner with no chlorinated solvent, acetone or MEK in it. Use the Degreaser and the oil on the metal, keep every liquid out of the striker channel, and wipe the frame dry when you are done. A Glock that has been cleaned that way for twenty years looks the way it did in the box. A Glock that met a can of brake cleaner once looks like it met a can of brake cleaner.

Non-chlorinated brake cleaner is less aggressive but still not a gun cleaner and still hard on night sights and finishes. Use a cleaner made for firearms.

Will gun cleaner damage night sights or a Cerakote finish?
